Image & video guidelines
Keep your store sharp and fast with sensible sizes, ratios, and compression.
Good media makes your theme look premium. Bad media makes any theme look broken.
General principles
- Upload the best-quality source you have, then optimise
- Use consistent aspect ratios in grids
- Keep file sizes lean to protect performance
Recommended image sizes (practical)
These are safe starting points for most modern themes:
- Product images: 2000–3000px on the longest side
- Collection cards: 1600–2400px longest side
- Homepage hero: 2400–3200px wide
- Brand/story imagery: 2000px wide
Aspect ratios (pick and stick)
- Product grids: 1:1 or 4:5 are the easiest to keep consistent
- Editorial sections: 16:9 or freeform, but don't mix within the same grid
Compression targets
- JPEG photos: aim for ~150–400KB where possible
- PNG: only when you need transparency
- Prefer modern formats if Shopify serves them automatically on the front end
Video: keep it simple
- Use short loops for hero sections (6–15 seconds)
- Avoid huge background videos on mobile
- Host video in Shopify where supported, or use a reputable platform embed
Common issues and fixes
- Images look blurry: source file is too small (upload a larger original)
- Images look cropped: mismatch between your image ratio and the section ratio
- Pages feel slow: oversized images or too many media-heavy sections above the fold
