Why won't my video autoplay?
Autoplay rules, sound restrictions, and how to make video sections behave reliably.
Most browsers restrict autoplay to protect users—especially on mobile.
Common reasons autoplay is blocked
- The video has audio enabled (muted autoplay is far more reliable).
- The browser is in low power mode or has data-saving enabled.
- The video is too large/heavy and doesn't load quickly enough.
- The section is configured for click-to-play behavior.
What to do
- Ensure the video is muted by default (best practice for storefronts).
- Keep videos short (6–15 seconds for background loops).
- Export in a web-friendly format and size so it starts fast.
- Test on:
- iOS Safari
- Android Chrome
- Desktop Chrome/Safari
Storefront UX guidance
- If the video contains important information, don't rely on autoplay—provide a visible play control.
- Avoid background video with sound. It hurts conversion and user trust.
